JAMES PARKWAY & PURYEAR DRIVE IMPROVEMENTS & 
MABEL CLARE THOMAS PARK PLAN

The city is in the planning stages to make improvements to Mabel Clare Thomas Park and James Parkway and Puryear Drive from Francis Drive to Kyle Avenue. In addition to these improvements, the city is developing a long-range park plan for the park's southern section that sits between Francis Drive and Kyle Avenue. The plan will reflect the community's needs and character, and recognizes the park's importance to the neighborhood. Tree preservation is a priority and will be given thoughtful consideration in the roadway and park improvements and during the park plan's development.

Proposed improvements to James Parkway, Puryear Drive, and Mabel Clare Thomas Park include:

• Rehabilitating the roadways.
• Upgrading drainage in the park and along the roadways.
• Adding and improving sidewalks and lighting.

The improvements could be constructed as early as late 2022 and funded through the city's Capital Projects and Parks and Recreation departments.

Since Mabel Clare Thomas Park's pool was removed, the community has been interested in identifying the park's next steps. The city is developing a long-range park plan for the section south of Francis Drive and would implement improvements in phases once the plan is adopted. The park plan identifies no funding for the construction or implementation of the improvements.

Potential plan elements include:

• Improving ADA accessibility and parking.
• Adding historical markers.
• Improving or adding park amenities.
