CSU recognized nationally for reliable public power services and stellar safety practices

College Station Utilities has earned the American Public Power Association’s Reliable Public Power Provider (RP3) designation and the Safety Award of Excellence at the Diamond Level, the organization’s highest classification.

The City of College Station’s electric utility belongs to an exclusive group of more than 250 public power utilities nationwide with the prestigious three-year RP3 designation. The recognition is a testament to CSU’s proficiency in reliability, safety, workforce development, and system improvement through sound business practices.

“CSU has earned the RP3 award continuously since 2009,” CSU Electric Director Timothy Crabb said. “To again be awarded the designation at the highest level is a tremendous achievement, and it results from employees who truly care about powering our community. But the designation isn’t a final destination; we remain committed to continuously improving our operations and service.”

The Safety Award of Excellence is based on the number of work-related reportable injuries or illnesses, worker hours, and the overall state of a utility’s safety programs and culture. Linework is among the 10 most dangerous jobs in the United States, and CSU dedicates hundreds of hours each year to train linemen, substations, and metering crews to work safely.

“The safety award is a genuine testament to the hard work that goes into ensuring our team members go home safe to their families every day,” Crabb said.

The APPA has offered the RP3 designation for 19 years and the safety award for 65 years. The organization represents the not-for-profit, community-owned utilities that power 49 million people in nearly 2,000 towns and cities nationwide. APPA advocates and advises on electricity policy, technology, trends, training, and operations, playing a crucial role in promoting and maintaining high industry standards.
